Average person’s eyes follow an F-pattern when they visit a website for the first time. But as a digital marketer when I visit a website, I always look for the traffic to decide whether I to stay or not to stay.
Knowing the amount of traffic a website gets, you can validate the website’s contents and helps you figure out how much traffic you need to get similar results.
Checking your website traffic isn’t that hard if you use the right tools. But checking another’s websites traffic is a lot more difficult, because most sites don’t publish their stats openly for public viewing. So the accurate numbers can be hard to come by. At best, you can try looking at the websites advertising page which may include marketing materials, demographic information and yes mostly traffic data.
But when that is not available, the only option is to rely on a website traffic estimator.
Here are 5 little known techniques for figuring out how much traffic a website gets.
- Check website traffic with SimilarWeb
SimilarWeb is the most popular choice when I want to check someone else website. The most unique value of SimilarWeb is its Top website ranking page were you can see the top ranking websites according to category and country, but it also allow you to reach specific domain and check particular sites stats.
When you search for a website, you get three points of data right away: global rank, country rank and category rank. These three stats are very important for finding the website competition at a glance. But if you scroll down to the page, you can see the engagement stats: monthly traffic, average visit duration, pages per visit, and bounce rate.
Keep scrolling and you’ll see a bunch of other details, such as traffic source breakdown, top referring sites, social media traffic, audience demographics and more. All of its available for free, solidifying this as the best website traffic checker tool.
- Quantcast giving you the most accurate website stats
Quantcast probably provides the most accurate website data stats, but it comes with two Red flags, first, the accuracy is a bit fluctuating from sites to site. And secondly the data is hardly limited compared to other sites like SimilarWeb or Alexa.
Maybe it’s because how Quantcast works, to collect data from a site, that particular website must set up Quantcasts data collection feed, which allows Quantcast to start collecting data and figuring out the traffic for tat site. Quantcast cannot estimate traffic data, if that site has not setup the collecting feed. Thus, you may not find stats for lesser known websites on Quantcast.
Not to mention, when a site is tracked, the Quantcast offers a lot information and accurate data to pore over. It provides insightful demographic breakdown which listed visitor ethnicity, shopping interests and media interests, occupations, and political affiliations as well.
- The best one so far: Ahrefs
We all know that Ahrefs are the most popular yet powerful search engine optimizing tools of all time. The webmasters use Ahrefs for mining all kinds of search traffic related data. The best thing is it works both for your websites and others.
Not only it offers accurate measures of the monthly traffic data but also allows you to see detailed breakdown of where the traffics is coming from. Especially it is great to find promising keywords. It allows you to check which keywords are bringing traffic for the website. It also great for back linking information, such as checking which other website are linking to the competitors sites, how often they are linking and how subsequently the data is changing.
But the bad news is, while Ahrefs offers these amazing perks, but it comes with a price. There is no free plan offered, but you can try a 7 day trial for $7. After that, it costs at least $99 a month for the lowest plan. It’s expensive; we know it but worth the data.
- The popular one: SEMRush
If you are into digital marketing, it’s impossible that you haven’t heard about SEMRush. This must be considered has the primary optimizing tools by any digital marketers. The perks of using SEMRush are that it helps you find the target keywords and more search engine traffic. However, it can be used to check other websites search traffic as well.
But honestly speaking, SEMRush won’t give absolute traffic numbers- if you want accurate traffic data, it is better to shift to SimilarWeb or Quantcast. But SEMRush is perfect when you want compare your data with other websites data. For that supposedly is it the most suitable choice.
It helps to show the top keywords and on top of that, you can see the actual numbers and the search engine positions for those particular keywords. It also offers stats filter by country and allowing to search based on regional basis.
It is important to note that SEMRush is a free tool, but as a free user you can get 10 searches a day and access only to the basis overview. With a paid plan you can unlock higher limits and more data, and it cost near about $100 a month. My favourite website traffic checker tool.
- Track your basics with Alexa
Alexa is probably the most used tool when it comes to website traffic estimation. But unfortunately, it comes without a free option. But it dumped down the free option and its useless without a paid version.
Alexa shows global Alexa rank and Country Alexa rank, with a simple chart showing the rise and fall of the ranking in the recent past. It also provides limited demographics and keywords information. It’s quite ungenerous but it’s okay if you want to compare two sites and see which one is more popular. It is a very good website traffic checker tool.
If you want to see more tan the limited data you get as a free Alexa user, but if you want an insight plan you have to upgrade the plan. Alexa offers $79 per month plan as the lowest plan. You can sign up for a 7 day free trial but you have to enter credit card details and you have to make sure to cancel the membership later on before the free trial ends.
If you want to see traffic estimate with Alexa, you need to sign up for an advanced plan which costs $149 per month, that’s way to expensive in compared to other estimator tools, which you get a lot cheaper.
Knowing your website traffics details does a lot of help in a long run. Specially when it comes to increasing the traffic. If you know the traffic stats before and you can design a better strategy plan to get more traffic. Also checking and comparing other websites traffic data also helps a lot. But always keep in mind that unless the owner of the website reveals the data, every other figure is a best guess. Most tools are surprisingly inaccurate when it comes to generating stats. However, compeering your web stats with other is a good SEO health exercise.
